Lice Being Found In More Patients Who Wear Eyelash Extensions, Doctors Warn - CBS New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Eyelash extensions are a huge beauty trend around the country, but doctors are now warning about a major health threat that could be lurking in between those lush lashes — lice.

You likely won’t be able to see them with the naked eye, but the waste left behind around the eye is visible. Doctors say they’re seeing more and more patients being diagnosed with eyelash lice.

Unlike the larger mites or lice typically found in the scalps of young children, these parasites are much smaller.

According to CBS-affiliate WRGB, the same lice that can be found on beds and other furniture can also grow on those false lashes.

(Credit: ALAIN JOCARD/AFP via Getty Images)

“Bacteria sets in and inflammation and eye goes red and inflamed, and with inflammation comes bacteria with a lot of infection, yellowish, greenish mucus,” South Carolina optometrist Dr. Dorothy Park said via WRGB — regarding the glue used in salons to attach the extensions.

Dr. David Samimi, an oculoplastic surgeon with Dignity Health, tells CBS Los Angeles the lice can be transferred to anyone person, but are more likely to infest people who have lash extensions.

This is because of the foreign body around the eye and eyelash extensions have a reputation of being very hard to clean. Luckily, this version of lice is reportedly easy to treat.

“Typically patients will clean with tea tree oil, to remove debris in the eyelids,” said Samimi, via CBS Los Angeles. “We can also do deep cleanings in the office.”

The average treatment for eyelash lice takes about six weeks.

To avoid the unnerving infestations in the first place, health experts urge eyelash customers to stick with daily cleaning rituals.

Japanese department store backtracks on plans for menstruating female employees to wear special badge - FOX 10 News Phoenix

Officials with a Japanese department store say they are reportedly reconsidering plans for female employees to wear a special badge when they are menstruating.

According to The Japan Times, the Daimaru department store in Osaka originally had plans for female employees to wear a badge that features a Japanese manga character called "Miss Period". The character, according to another article by The Japan Times, became popular in 2017 in the form of a web-published comic, and was later turned into a movie that was released in early November 2019.

Reports from the BBC say the plans involve introducing the badge to female staff members in the women's wardrobe section of the store. The badges were introduced after a suggestion from employees, and wearing them was voluntary.

Officials with the department store say they had hoped to encourage bonding with the plan, The Japan Times reported.

"We received many complaints from the public. Some of them concerned harassment, and that was definitely not our intention," said one male executive with the department store. The Japan Times reported that the male executive did not want to be identified."

European Tour lets golfers wear shorts for first time ever at Alfred Dunhill Championship - CBSSports.com

On Thursday, golfers at a European Tour event were allowed to wear shorts for the first time ever. The decision at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa was made after rising temperatures hit triple digits, according to the Associated Press.

European Tour CEO Keith Pelley, tournament host Johann Rupert and players at the event discussed the matter and agreed that, for the sake of everyone's health, shorts would only be allowed at this particular event.

With temperatures expected to hit 104 degrees at the Leopard Creek Country club later this week, tournament director David Williams believes it was the right call.

"We felt that in this situation it was a good move," he said. "The temperatures will increase as the week goes on, which is uncomfortable and could be a health issue for the players."

He added that the golfers were vocal about their worries over the heat.

"A lot of players were concerned about it. In these temperatures it can be pretty uncomfortable out there in trousers," he said.

Ernie Els, a four-time major winner, said he hopes this "common sense" move is done again in the future for similar tour situations.

"It's the right thing to do," he said. "It's been talked about for so long on all of the tours around the world... I think this could be a game-changer for golf which could end up enhancing the product."

The European Tour let players were shorts during practice rounds and pro-ams in 2016, but has never allowed it during a tournament. In February, the U.S. PGA Tour made the announcement of the same rule change.

"I would love it. We play in some of the hottest climates on the planet," Tiger Woods said of allowing golfers to wear shorts at events.

European Tour officials let players wear shorts in competition for the first time with triple-digit heat in South Africa - Golf Digest

The opening tournament of the 2019-’20 European Tour season became notable for something other than being merely the opening tournament of the 2019-’20 season. For the first time in tour history, players were allowed to wear shorts during competition.

With temperatures forecasted to reach triple digits all week at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa, players and tournament officials discussed options to beat the heat. Ultimately, all sides agreed that lifting the requirement that golfers wear long pants during the competition was in everybody’s best interest.

“We felt that in this situation it was good move,” said tournament director Davie Williams. “The temperatures will increase as the week goes on, which is uncomfortable and could be a health issue for the players. A lot of players were concerned about it. In these temperatures it can be pretty uncomfortable out there in trousers.”

The relaxation of the pants rule applies to this tournament only, according to officials, although so long as there are no issues at Leopard Creek Country Club, it’s easy to see the precedent becoming an unwritten rule at other extreme heat venues the tour visits.

“It’s been talked about for so long on all the tours around the world,” noted Ernie Els, who shot two-over 74 in the first round on Thursday. “I think this could be a game-changer for golf, which could end up enhancing the product.”

South Africans Richard Sterne, Ernie Els and George Coetzee walk down the fairway in shorts during opening round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

The European Tour has allowed players to wear shorts for practice round and pro-ams since 2016. The PGA Tour adopted that same policy this year.

France’s Wil Besseling shot an seven-under 65 to take the Day 1 lead.

While this is the first time in European Tour history that shorts have been wore in competition, there have been instances on the PGA Tour where players have worn them. Curt Sampson in a story for Golf Digest discovered that Fred Haas Jr., won the 1945 Memphis Open wearing shorts.

Japanese department store 'reconsidering' plan for staff to wear menstruation badges - CNBC

A woman's health store in Japan is reportedly reviewing a plan for staff to wear badges when they are on their period.

The so-called "physiology badge" features a cartoon character named Seiri Chan, a symbol of menstruation in the world's third-largest economy.

It was hoped that the badges would help foster sympathy among co-workers, with those choosing to wear the pin likely to receive extra help or longer breaks.

However, when Daimaru told the media about the policy earlier this month, it prompted a backlash against the store.

"We received many complaints from the public. Some of them concerned harassment, and that was definitely not our intention. We're reconsidering plans now," a male executive who declined to be named said in a statement, according to The Japan Times.

A spokesperson was not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC on Friday.

The Daimaru branch at Osaka Umeda first introduced the policy in October, according to Japanese publication WWD. It was brought in for the roughly 500 employees working in the store's women's wardrobe section.

#KuToo

The badges, which were double-sided, were initially brought in after a suggestion from the firm's staff and were linked to the opening of a new section of the department store.

On one side of the badge was Seiri Chan, a cartoon character reportedly known as "Miss Period." On the other side were details of a new section being opened in the store devoted to "women's wellbeing."

Outcry against the policy comes with many cases of workplace harassment in the public spotlight in Japan, amid changing values about gender roles and work-life balance.

Earlier this month, research carried out by the Japanese Trade Union Confederation found that more than one in 10 companies in Japan have formal regulations about the length of heeled shoes female workers must wear.

Actress and writer Yumi Ishikawa had previously launched a petition for discriminatory workplace dress codes to be scrapped, after being made to wear high heels while working at a funeral parlor.

The petition has received tens of thousands of signatures in recent months, with supporters of the campaign often seen tweeting #KuToo.

The slogan, which mirrors the #MeToo movement against sexual abuse, is a play on words from the Japanese kutsu, meaning shoes and kutsuu, meaning pain.

In June, Japan's Health and Labour Minister, Takumi Nemoto, told a legislative committee that it was "necessary and appropriate" for women to wear high heels at work.

The Men’s Wear Designer Keeping a Heritage Brand Cool - The New York Times

Kris Van Assche, the artistic director of Berluti, grew up an only child in Belgium’s Flemish-speaking region of Londerzeel, between Antwerp and Brussels. “Nobody I knew was interested in art or fashion, so there was no predestination,” says the designer, 43. He credits his paternal grandmother with sparking his love of beauty, saying, “She always set a lovely table and she made all her own clothes — and mine.” After graduating from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, where he studied women’s wear, in 1998, Van Assche was offered an internship designing men’s wear for Yves Saint Laurent; unsure if he wanted to live in Paris, he decided it would be a good placeholder until he found other work in London, Milan or New York. But then he met Hedi Slimane, at the time the brand’s creative director of men’s wear, whom he followed to Dior Homme in 2000. Four years later, Van Assche started his own label — conceptual suiting with a sportswear bent — only to return to Dior in 2007 to replace Slimane in the top job.

Since arriving at Berluti last April, Van Assche has imbued the heritage brand, which was founded as a luxury shoe maker in 1895 and later counted Andy Warhol and Frank Sinatra as regular clients, with a streetwear-inspired edge. At his debut show, he presented leather-embossed logo sweatshirts, graphic motorcycle pants and angular, metal-tipped sneakers alongside hand-cut leather suits and playful iterations of the brand’s signature dress shoe. Van Assche was known for his high-low aesthetic during his tenure at Dior Homme, but here, his clothes, from jewel-toned trench coats to boldly colored silk shirts and even a few ostrich-feather-adorned women’s looks, feel especially distinct. “I want to respect the brand’s DNA while bringing it to a new audience,” says Van Assche, who is still in Paris and dedicates much of his off time to seeing and collecting art and midcentury design objects. “The goal is to prove that craftsmanship does not apply only to the traditional or the classic — it can also be contemporary and cool.”

“The London-based photographer Ronan Gallagher, whom I’ve worked with on many projects, took this portrait of me in Paris this past autumn. He’s known for his documentary and fashion photography and for working with a warm light that gives his images a saturated sense of depth.”

Left: “Earlier this year, I traveled to Chandigarh, a planned city in northern India that was largely designed by Le Corbusier and his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, in the mid-20th century, to work with Ronan on visuals for Berluti’s social media and to shoot our pre-fall collection. This is a picture of the doors at the Palace of Assembly, one of a series of administrative buildings by Le Corbusier known as the Capitol Complex. I’ve always been attracted to their work, but seeing these volumes and colors in person was just incredible.”

Right: “After I returned from Chandigarh, Berluti partnered with Laffanour Galerie Downtown in Paris to update 17 pieces of original Jeanneret furniture. The gallery team restored the works’ frames, to which Berluti added leather upholstery — each one a different color inspired by my trip. They’re all being presented during this year’s Design Miami fair.”

Top left: “I’m a fanatic for 1950s French ceramics, and I first saw this abstract architectural work by Jean Megard, along with several similar pieces, in the house I rented for my summer holiday this August. I was so in love with them that my friends secretly contacted the owner and asked if they might buy one for me. It was such a kind gesture — and now the piece reminds me of my closest friends.”

Bottom left:Ben Sledsens is a young painter who creates colorful, naïve images of nature and everyday moments, and is one of my favorite Belgian artists. I’ve had a total crush on his work since I first came across it in 2016 at the Tim Van Laere Gallery in Antwerp, and have been trying to collect as much as I can, which isn’t easy because it’s so sought after. I succeeded with this wonderfully vibrant painting, ‘Wasp and Yellow Flowers in a Vase’ (2018).”

Right:Robert Mapplethorpe’s ‘White Gauze’ (1984) was the very first piece of art I purchased for myself. What I see in the work is a couple united in both love and pain. It’s love — for better and for worse.”

“The print of this coat, part of my debut show for Berluti this past January, mimics that of a marble table in the Berluti factory in Ferrara, Italy. Craftspeople hand-dye shoes, bags and other leather goods on its surface, and season after season different stains sink in, adding to the patina. It’s a good metaphor for the brand itself, and I like the idea of having a chic material in a work space — that contrast between the elegant and the rough.”

Left: “This is my cat, Frida, named after Frida Kahlo. She’s a Burmese and has been with me for seven years. She lives with me in my apartment in Paris. Or rather, I live with her — she’s the sweetest but a bit of a queen.”

Center: “Here is my old student ID from the academy. It was a tough school, but it was also a great time in my life. I think I was 12 or 13 when I decided I wanted to be in fashion, and the first designers I became aware of — Jean Paul Gaultier and Thierry Mugler — worked in Paris. But then I learned that there was a fashion school not far from my home and began waiting for my chance to go.”

Right: “This is the best place in central Antwerp for fries. I started going when I was a student, and the same lady still works there today. My friends in Paris make fun of me because I am really very Belgian in this regard: I could happily eat fries every day.”

Left: “I don’t really have idols or muses, but this 1986 image of Sean Penn fighting a paparazzo in New York — as he was known to do while dating Madonna — has a habit of reappearing on my mood boards. It’s not so politically correct, and we all know by now that she didn’t need saving, but I find it outrageously romantic.”

Right: “This is a framed photo from around 1916 of my great-grandfather on what I believe was his wedding day. My grandmother was very fond of him, and I was very fond of her — she’s the one who taught me to sew. The image was important to her, so when she died, I kept it.”

Top left: “Contemporary dance is something I learn a lot from. This is a still from the 1983 debut of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s ‘Rosas Danst Rosas’ — I saw a live restaging of the work at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris 10 years ago and was touched by its purity. It’s just four female dancers, and the choreography is based on the repetition of mundane and universal movements. Between the gestures, the chairs and the clothes, it has a minimalist, radical and frankly very Belgian vibe.”

Bottom left: “Since Berluti is known first and foremost as a shoe brand, shoes have become a big part of my job. This one, with shocks of hand-applied patina in cobalt blue, recalls Berluti’s iconic Alessandro model, which originally launched in 1895 and became the brand’s signature design, but we reworked the form and gave it these graphic details. It’s been a pleasant surprise to find that Berluti’s more traditional customers are actually very open to change.”

Right: “I found this 1989 fashion book, ‘Mode in de Lage Landen: België’ (‘Fashion in the Low Countries: Belgium’), around the time I was trying to get into the academy. It’s a real authority on the Antwerp Six, but also discusses other designers you’ve never heard of. It represented everything I wanted to be at the time and, since my acceptance into the school was far from guaranteed, became a sort of wishful-thinking bible.”

SEATTLE - For the second time this season, the Seattle Seahawks will wear their Action Green jerseys when they take on the Minnesota Vikings Monday.

Monday's game against the 8-3 Vikings will be broadcast on KIRO 7. Pre-game coverage begins after our 4 p.m. newscast with KIRO 7 Game Day Live. Kickoff is at 5:15 p.m.

However, there will be less Action Green than fans have seen in the past.

For the first time since the jersey re-design in 2012, the Seahawks will pair the ‘Action Green' jersey with blue pants.

The Seahawks wore their full Action Green uniform in a 30-29 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football earlier this season.

Fan versions of the "Action Green" jerseys are available for purchase at all four Seahawks Pro Shop locations and online.

Seattle has a 4-0 record all-time when wearing their current action Green jerseys.

Combine their undefeated record in the Action Green with their 28-5-1 record in prime time games under Pete Carroll and Seahawks fans should feel confident heading into Monday night's showdown.

European Tour allows players to wear shorts during event for first time at Alfred Dunhill Championship - Golf Channel

MALELANE, South Africa — Golfers were allowed to wear shorts during a European Tour event for the first time on Thursday because of sweltering temperatures.

The decision to relax rules at the 2020 season-opening Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa was made after discussions between players, European Tour CEO Keith Pelley, and tournament host Johann Rupert. It applies for this event only.

Temperatures are predicted to reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) over the next few days at the Leopard Creek Country Club, which borders the Kruger Park wildlife reserve in northern South Africa.

“We felt that in this situation it was a good move,” said the European Tour’s David Williams, the tournament director. “The temperatures will increase as the week goes on, which is uncomfortable and could be a health issue for the players.

“A lot of players were concerned about it. In these temperatures it can be pretty uncomfortable out there in trousers.”

Full-field scores from the Alfred Dunhill Championship

In 2016, the European Tour allowed players to wear shorts for practice rounds and pro-ams but not tournament play. The U.S. PGA Tour brought in the same policy this year.

Four-time major winner Ernie Els said allowing shorts this week was “common sense” and hoped it wouldn’t be the last time in a tournament.

“It’s going to get up to 40 degrees here and it’s the right thing to do,” Els said. “It’s been talked about for so long on all of the tours around the world ... I think this could be a game-changer for golf which could end up enhancing the product.”

When the U.S. PGA Tour announced in February it was allowing shorts for practice and pro-ams, it said it noted the opinions of leading players.

Asked for his view on allowing shorts, Tiger Woods said: “I would love it. We play in some of the hottest climates on the planet.”

Rory McIlroy said: “It makes the guys a lot more comfortable. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with professional golfers showing the lower half of their leg.”

Rory McIlroy said: “It makes the guys a lot more comfortable. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with professional golfers showing the lower half of their leg.”

European Tour lets players wear shorts for first time - FOXSports.com

MALELANE, South Africa (AP) — Golfers were allowed to wear shorts during a European Tour event for the first time on Thursday because of sweltering temperatures.

“It’s been talked about for so long on all of the tours around the world … I think this could be a game-changer for golf which could end up enhancing the product.”

She wanted to wear Ava DuVernay's dress to a ball. So the filmmaker sent it to her - CNN

But she never thought she'd get to wear it.
Yet, that's exactly what happened after the North Carolina woman tweeted a picture of the filmmaker wearing the long-sleeved, red gown.
"OMG @ava I need this dress" for the Marine Corps Ball, Hester wrote alongside the picture of DuVernay, taken at a gala for the opening of Tyler Perry Studios in October.
"Send me your address," DuVernay responded.
Hester couldn't believe her eyes and messaged the "Selma" director in disbelief.
"I told her my size and she said 'I think it's going to fit like a glove,'" Hester told CNN.
Last week, just a few days before a Marine Corps Ball Hester was planning to attend with her husband and young daughter, the dress came in the mail. She said she hurried home from work and tried it on.
Sure enough, the dress fit.
Ciara Hester rocked Ava DuVernay's red dress
"(DuVernay) didn't know this but before I tweeted at her I had just made a post on social media about dealing with depression," Hester said. "This dress does really mean a lot to me."
She said DuVernay's actions gave her "a little bit of hope, a little bit of strength that good things do happen."
She says she hopes others who share DuVernay's level of fame remember how important their actions could be.
"These are people in positions that people look up to (and) it's really important for them to remember that just a small gesture to anybody can make a huge difference. Even if they're not realizing they're doing it," she said.
DuVernay saw the pictures -- and shared her thoughts.
"You wore it well," she posted on Twitter, tagging Hester. "Hope you had a night as lovely as you."

Broncos to wear navy jerseys in Week 13 vs. Chargers - DenverBroncos.com

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos will don their alternate navy jerseys for the second and final time in the 2019 season during their Week 13 game against the Chargers.

The team has not yet announced which color pants the Broncos will wear.

The Broncos wore blue jerseys and white pants in a Week 6 win over the Titans. Denver last wore its all-blue uniforms last year against Cleveland.

The Broncos switched from their navy jerseys to their current orange home jerseys in 2012.

Denver will wear its Color Rush uniforms in Week 16 against the Lions.

Seahawks to wear a new jersey combo on Monday night vs. Vikings - Yahoo Sports

The Seattle Seahawks announced that they'll be rocking a new uniform combo on Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings: "Action Green" tops and navy blue pants.

The combo has drawn a polarizing response from fans on social media. Bobby Wagner, who had a hand in picking the look, said he's excited to rock it under the primetime lights at CenturyLink Field.

"I think it'll look fire with the J's I've got," Wagner said.

Here's a look at the clears Wagner will be wearing against the Vikings.

Of note, Wagner said there's a 10-player council who has a say in which uniforms the Seahawks wear and when. He said his least favorite combo is all white. His favorite is blue jerseys on gray pants. He also made his case for having all black jerseys with green trim. Wagner has apparently been pining Nike for them since he entered the league in 2012.

Seahawks to wear Action Green — with a twist — on Monday Night Football - MyNorthwest.com

The Seahawks will wear a green/blue uniform combo Monday for the first time since 2009. (Getty)

The Seattle Seahawks have a lot of different looks that they can put together with their uniform combinations.

Shaquill Griffin happy to see Hawks letting twin Shaquem ‘do what does’

There’s the all-blue scheme, the all-gray scheme, the all-white scheme… you get the picture. And then there’s any number of combinations you can think of between all those different versions of pants and jerseys.

One thing that has been untouchable, however, are the Seahawks’ “Action Green” uniforms. Typically worn during Thursday night games, the Seahawks have only worn those particular bright green jerseys with their matching bright green pants since they overhauled their uniforms ahead of the 2012 season.

Well, until now, that is.

That’s right – the Seahawks announced Wednesday that they are breaking out the Action Green jerseys for the second time this season for their upcoming Monday Night Football game against the Minnesota Vikings, but they’re changing up the pants, opting instead for blue bottoms.

Believe or not, the Seahawks actually wore a similar combo to this before in 2009 for a game against the Chicago Bears. The jersey color then was called lime green, and it was the first time the team wore anything close to the highlighter-esque shade we have become so familiar with over the last few years.

Say what you want about whether uniforms are a factor in how teams play – personally, I’ve never made it a secret about where I stand on the issue – but the Seahawks are 4-0 in Action Green since they began wearing the uniforms on an annual basis in 2016, including a 30-29 win over the defending NFC champion Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 3.
