Important game ahead for Husker football. New look too.
Nebraska will wear its black alternate uniforms for Saturday's game against Indiana, Scott Frost confirmed.
A video from the Husker football Twitter account teasing it had appeared earlier Monday. It wasn't exactly the biggest news at a press conference that mostly featured talk about the status of Maurice Washington.
But the black alternate jerseys are something Frost would like to incorporate annually on behalf of the Blackshirts.
"Yep, we're going to wear the alternate jersey this week so I told the team this morning, if we're going to wear them, they better show up and play with an attitude that makes the Blackshirt alumni proud," Frost said.
There was no grand reason for choosing to wear them this game.
"We're running out of home games," the coach simply said.
Back in August, it was unveiled that Nebraska would wear the black alternatives for one game. Frost was one of the leaders behind the idea.
“I guess I can spill the beans," Frost said then. "I think by next year, hopefully, we have a home and away version of this. And down the road, I'd like to see it be a tradition that if the defense has a great game and holds an opponent under so many points that they earn the right to wear Blackshirts (uniforms) the next week. I think that would be another source of pride for our defense.”
Nebraska’s defense has been improved some statistically compared to last year, but was licking its wounds heading into the bye week. Nebraska dropped a 34-7 decision to Minnesota on the road, and the Blackshirts come into this week’s contest against Indiana ranked No. 64 in total defense. That number is an improvement over last year’s group, but is a total that has been moving in the wrong direction since the start of Big Ten play.
Senior linebacker Mohamed Barry said the biggest thing this past week for the Huskers has been getting back to the fundamentals, with a lot of live action between the 1s during the bye week.
"You just have to tell (the guys), the slate of games we have in front of us, they can beat us and we can can beat them," Barry said. "It's what we do now. That's all that matters. They say life is 10 percent what happened to you, and 90 percent how you react to it. That's how we have to look at that (Minnesota) game. Our reaction to that ... and our preparation this week is what matters."
The Blackshirt tradition is an important one to the program, and especially Frost, who has brought in former Husker players to talk about the tradition, and had former Nebraska defenders hand out Blackshirts to current players before the start of the season.
The Kelsay brothers, Jason Peter, Jay Foreman and Grant Wistrom are among those who have come to Nebraska’s practices to talk to current players.
As Foreman told Husker247 this August of his Blackshirt: “It means everything. It literally does. I have a lot of jerseys – framed. I have two in my office. I have my first Nebraska jersey and I have my Blackshirt. Those are two of the most important things. They’re sentimental. I’ll tell you this. In my will, that Blackshirt is going to be in (the casket) with me. If that doesn’t tell you what it means to me, I don’t know what else to tell you."
Nebraska unveiled its new adidas alternate uniforms paying homage to their starting defensive unit, also known as the "blackshirts." ??
