Texas A&M to wear 'Aggie Ring' cleats Saturday against UTSA - The Dallas Morning News

COLLEGE STATION -- Texas A&M will be wearing its standard jerseys Saturday against UTSA, but the Aggies have a twist to their cleats to honor seniors on the team and one of A&M’s top traditions.

Each player can wear alternative Aggie Ring-themed cleats, and players who have qualified to get their Aggie Ring, by completing 90 hours, will have a special ‘lace jewel’ on the laces featuring the top of the real Aggie Ring.

This alternative cleat option is part of A&M’s senior day this Saturday.

“Adidas came to us with the concept of doing an Aggie Ring commemorative cleat that we would wear for senior day,” Matt Watson, A&M assistant athletic director for equipment and apparel, told 12thMan.com. “We thought it was a great idea to showcase one, our seniors on the team, and two, honor the academic side and the Aggie Ring itself.”

The white cleats have parts of the left and right side of the Aggie Ring embroidered into the shoe.

“The shoes are obviously very cool in and of themselves,” Marty Holmes, vice president of Texas A&M’s Association of Former Students, told 12thMan.com “But the fact that the ring crest shoelace jewel gets to be worn by seniors only is certainly a pride moment for those seniors--that one, they have it on their hand, but also that they obviously have a piece on the field that shows, hey, I’m a senior and I really attained something here.”

A&M and UTSA are set for an 11 a.m. kickoff Saturday at Kyle Field. The game will be televised on SEC Network.

“I think the players are going to think it’s awesome because no one’s ever done this before,” Justin Moore, Texas A&M senior associate athletic director, told 12thMan.com. “You can’t go to the store and buy this. So any time you can do that for the kids, that’s what they like. It’s something you can’t get. It’s new. It’s special. It’s unique. They’ll be excited to put them on and play well in them.”
