In the lead up to Remembrance Sunday, members of the royal family are participating in a number of commemorative events to pay tribute to those who have died while serving their country. This morning, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are visiting the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey.
For the poignant occasion, Meghan chose to wear a navy blue coat with a black, a somber look which she paired with slouchy leather boots and a chic velvet fascinator. In some photos from the event, Meghan appears to be wearing a black dress underneath her outwear.
She is also sporting a bright red poppy on her chests, a symbol worn throughout Britain to honor fallen troops during the month of November.
As the lore goes, during World War I after a battle in Belgium, thousands of the crimson flowers mysteriously appeared. Poet John McCrae then wrote a poem about the blooms' resilience, titled “In Flanders Fields.”
From that 1915 literary work sprung a movement, known as the Poppy Appeal, and now fundraising effort to support veterans, symbolized by the flower, takes place every November.
While Prince Harry's mother-in-law, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, was also scheduled to be at this morning's event, she had to cancel last-minute due to illness.
"The Duchess of Cornwall has been told by her doctor to cancel her engagements owing to a chest infection which has got progressively worse over the last few days," reads a statement from Clarence House, released earlier today.
Meghan, Harry, and Camilla (if she's feeling better), are all expected to attend several additional Remembrance Day events, including the annual Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday, and the annual Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph on Sunday.
This weekend could be one of the last times the public sees Meghan and Harry before Christmas.
According to the Sunday Times, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be taking six weeks off from their royal duties starting in November, and plan spend their first Thanksgiving as a family of three with Meghan's mother Doria in L.A.
A royal source told reporter Roya Nikkah, "The duke and duchess have a full schedule of engagements and commitments until mid-November, after which they will be taking some much-needed family time."
