Syracuse men’s basketball players wear #NotAgainSU shirts to support protesters - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Members of the Syracuse men’s basketball team wore warm-up T-shirts with the hashtag #NotAgainSU before its game against Cornell on Wednesday night. The game is set to tip-off at 7:30.

The entire team wore the shirts coming out of the lockerroom 25 minutes before the game.

The school put out a picture of the warm-up shirts on its Twitter account, along with a quote from star Elijah Hughes.

“As a team we want to show support for our fellow students and all those who are working toward ensuring a safe and welcoming community,” the quote said.

Syracuse director of athletic communications for men’s basketball Pete Moore said members of the team will wear the T-shirts during warm-ups but will wear customary clothing on the benches once the game starts.

As the team was warming up an hour before the game, point guard Jalen Carey and center John Bol Ajak were wearing the protest T-shirts. Other players wore plain white T-shirts or warm-up jerseys with “Tough for T” in appreciation of women’s basketball player Tiana Mangakahia and her fight against cancer.

The hashtag #NotAgainSU has been utilized by protesters and others to reference a wave of racist and Anti-Semitic incidents that have occurred on SU’s campus over the past two weeks, including multiple instances of racist graffiti, a Swastika being drawn in the snow and a racial slur yelled at a student that led to the suspension of a fraternity.

The hashtag references repeated incidents of prejudice or perceived prejudice on campus in recent years, as well as the school’s response to them, including videos produced by the Theta Tau fraternity and an off-campus assault in which a racial slur was used but both Syracuse’s Department of Public Safety and the Syracuse Police Department did not believe was racially motivated.

The hashtag also refers to repeated criticism about how the school has responded to those incidents, as well as what many protesters consider repeated failed efforts by the school to change the culture at the school and make students from marginalized communities feel comfortable on the campus.

Syracuse players Hughes and Buddy Boeheim have said they supported the protesters after each of the Orange’s last two games, as has head coach Jim Boeheim. Most of their comments supporting protesters have centered on their efforts pushing back against racism and prejudice rather than a criticism of the school’s response or efforts.

Hughes said after the last game that he was hoping to gather his teammates and do something to support the students pushing for change.

“We didn’t really get together (as a team to talk afterward)," Hughes said. “It’s something I look forward to doing, getting the guys together, picking their brains and thoughts about things, and to see if we can do something, even if it’s small. We want to let them know we recognize them and we’re supporting them.”
