NBA All-Stars to wear Kobe Bryant's No. 24 and Gianna Bryant's No. 2 - ESPN

The NBA's All-Stars will be playing this year with Kobe Bryant and Gianna Bryant on their minds and on their jerseys.

So, coming soon: No. 24 Giannis Antetokounmpo and No. 2 LeBron James.

As part of what will be a series of tributes to Bryant and his daughter Gianna, the NBA announced Friday that every player on Team Giannis will wear 24 on his jersey and every player on Team LeBron will wear 2 at this year's All-Star Game.

Kobe Bryant spent the final 10 seasons of his career in a No. 24 jersey. Gianna Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and an outstanding young player, wore No. 2 on her jersey.

All players taking part in All-Star Weekend -- including the Rising Stars game Feb. 14 and the Saturday night events such as the 3-point contest, slam dunk contest and skills competition -- will wear a patch with nine stars to commemorate the nine victims of Sunday's helicopter crash in Calabasas, California.

The patches for Feb. 14 and Feb. 15 will also bear the Nos. 2 and 24. The patches for the All-Star Game will be slightly different, showing only the nine stars since players will already be wearing the numbers.

The decision means that almost every All-Star is assured of wearing a different number than usual. The only All-Star who regularly wears 2 or 24 is Kawhi Leonard, who dons No. 2 for the LA Clippers.

Antetokounmpo and James, the captains for the Feb. 16 game in Chicago, will pick their teams this coming Thursday.

"It's been a rough week because of Kobe," said Miami Heat forward Bam Adebayo, a first-time All-Star who never met Bryant but was a huge fan and was hoping to meet him at All-Star Weekend this year. "Just going through that, it's been rough."

The plan for the jersey numbers is the second known Bryant-related tribute scheduled for this year's All-Star Game. The NBA has changed the format and will add 24 -- Bryant's last number -- to whatever the leading team's score is after three quarters to set a target score. The first team to hit that target score will win the game.

The patches will pay tribute to John, Keri and Alyssa Altobelli; Sarah and Payton Chester; Christina Mauser; and Ara Zobayan in addition to the Bryants. The group was on its way to a basketball tournament where Gianna Bryant was scheduled to play when the helicopter they were traveling in crashed. There were no survivors.

Jersey-related tributes have been many in the days since the crash. Connecticut's women's basketball team displayed a No. 2 jersey for Gianna Bryant -- she was a UConn fan and hoped to play there one day -- on its bench for a game earlier this week against the U.S. national team. Hockey star Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals took the ice this week in a No. 24 jersey as a Bryant tribute; Ovechkin usually wears No. 8, the number Bryant used in his first 10 years with the Los Angeles Lakers.

A number of NBA players have announced that they will no longer wear 8 or 24 in tribute. All-Star Joel Embiid of Philadelphia played in a No. 24 jersey instead of his usual No. 21 earlier this week, his way of showing respect to Bryant. Atlanta All-Star Trae Young, who idolized Bryant, started a game in a No. 8 jersey on Sunday before switching back to his usual No. 11.

Bryant is the No. 4 scorer in NBA history and was an 18-time All-Star during a 20-year career, all with the Lakers. He started 15 of those All-Star Games, a record that will be passed this year when James starts his 16th.

Bryant -- still the youngest All-Star in league history -- was All-Star MVP four times, tying Bob Pettit for the most ever. Bryant's 38 career All-Star steals is another game record.

The NBA's All-Star teams will wear Kobe and Gianna Bryant's numbers - For The Win

All week, the entire basketball world has been all about honoring Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna Bryant, after their tragic passing.

That’s going to continue at the NBA’s All-Star game. The league introduced one initiative yesterday when they announced the game’s new format will have an Elam Ending, which includes a nod to Bryant’s final NBA number, 24.

Not only will Bryant’s number determine the final score, but the two teams that will face each other in the game are going to wear Kobe’s number 24 and Gianna’s number 2 in the actual All-Star game.

Team LeBron is suiting up in Gianna’s No. 2 and Team Giannis is wearing Kobe’s No. 24.

I don’t know about the whole Elam Ending thing — I’m still doing the math on that one a day later. But this latest decision is perfect.

Fans were suggesting that the league have the teams wear 8 and 24 to honor Kobe, but the league did one better by honoring Gianna with number 2.

This is an absolute slam dunk. Good on the league for figuring it out.

'Dystopian situation': China using 'sharp-tongued drones' to force citizens to wear face masks - Washington Examiner

The Communist Party of China is reportedly using drone surveillance to force citizens in certain areas to wear face masks to protect against the coronavirus.

"Walking around without a protective face mask? Well, you can't avoid these sharp-tongued drones!" the Global Times, the Communist Party's English-speaking paper, said Friday in a tweet. "Many village and cities in China are using drones equipped with speakers to patrol during the #coronavirus outbreak."

Jennifer Zeng, a human rights activist, tweeted out more video of the drones operating Friday. "Traffic police in Muyang, China, using drone to check on passengers and then giving orders remotely via loudspeaker," she said.

Traffic officers blasted, "Where is your mask? Wear your mask!" in Chinese through the drones that had audio capabilities.

Some on social media called the measure "Orwellian." The government used the drones as the coronavirus has infected thousands and killed over 200 people.

Americans have been evacuated from Wuhan, China, and the State Department issued a travel advisory against going to China.

What to Wear: February 2020 Events in Nashville - StyleBlueprint

Love is in the air … and so is some seriously great style! But it’s not all about Valentine’s Day; February offers an abundance of exciting Nashville events. This month, we’re indulging our artistic side at 21c Museum Hotel’s Love: An Evening of Spoken Word, tasting the best beverages at Triple Sip, and making sure Valentine’s Day (or Galentine’s if that’s your preference) is shaping up to be a stylish affair.

With its original trusses and yellow beams left over from its days as a church fellowship hall, Hathorne provided the perfect backdrop for the beautiful ensembles pulled by stylist Cynthia Kelley and modeled by Amy Marsalis and Lauren McCarthy. With looks from Duet, E. Allen and Hemline, you’re sure to be inspired. Not to mention, many of the items we’re featuring this month can be found on sale. Take a look!

The Event: Valentine’s Day

  • February 14, 2020
  • As fancy as you feel!

Though predictable, it seems only natural to gravitate toward red and pink this month, and there’s no better day to don those vibrant reds and perfect pinks than on Valentine’s Day — or Galentine’s if you celebrate the love of friendship — on February 14.

What to wear: If you’re headed out with your beau, we suggest a fun yet fancy ensemble with a pop of rouge. We’re going with a classic black and white blouse with fitted faux leather pants, accented by a hat that shows you’re both on-trend and ready to have a good time! If you’re hanging with the girls for Galentine’s Day, try going the casual route with jeans, a celebratory pink top and some comfy shoes that are ready to take you wherever the night leads.

Look #1:

On Amy, from Hemline: Black-and-white striped blouse, $295; Frame black faux snakeskin pants, $245; hat, $96

Measuring Chain Wear Accurately - VeloNews

Take the guesswork out of chain stretch, and be scientific about drivetrain wear.

It’s important to measure your chain for elongation. A worn chain will quickly damage the teeth of your gear sprockets, because the distance between chain rivets exceeds the spacing between the teeth. When pedaling a worn chain, a rider’s force at any instant is concentrated on the tooth that happens to be at the top of the chainring, and atop the rear cog, rather than distributed evenly across the other teeth.

Almost all chain-wear indicators are go/no-go gauges that push the rollers at each end of the gauge away from each other, thus measuring the wear on those two rollers, and the distance between them. Checking a chain consists of pushing a tang on one end of the gauge into the chain, and then pushing a curved tang at the other end into the chain a number of links away. How deeply the curved tang goes into the chain ostensibly determines a chain’s elongation.

These gauges, however, can give you a false reading by simply pushing worn rollers apart. One way to minimize this inaccuracy is with a longer chain gauge. The longer the gauge, the less important is its measurement of wear on two rollers relative to the length of chain between them. Also, since SRAM AXS 12-speed road chains have larger rollers (7.95mm vs 7.75mm on most other chains), these two-point gauges will be off by 0.2mm from the get-go.

The most accurate chain-wear method is direct mea- surement. Since chains are on an inch standard, if the distance between the pins on either end of a set of 24 links measures 12-1/8”, rather than 12”, the chain length has grown by one percent (since 0.125” is approximately 1 percent of 12”). Measuring 24 links of chain requires good light, sharp eyes, and sometimes reading glasses. You need to clean the chain and measure it with a rule or a set of calipers. This method, quite obviously, is less convenient than simply using a chain gauge.

The most accurate chain-wear method is direct measurement. Photo: Brad Kaminski

For simplicity and accuracy, I recommend Pedro’s Chain Checker Plus II, as well as Shimano’s TL-CN42 Chain Wear Indicator. Both instruments measure chain length directly, and take the roller wear out of the equation. Both tools require two hands to use. So, one hand will get dirty on the chain. Both tools are also slower to use than a traditional chain gauge.

Both tools are more accurate because they use three tangs to measure the chain; two tangs are close together, and when pushed into the chain, push the rollers firmly away from each other. The third tang contacts the same side of a roller approximately 10 links away as the nearest tang. Since both of these tangs push the same direction against the rollers, they evaluate the distance between the pins those rollers surround.

If the third tang goes into the chain, it indicates that the chain has elongated by 0.75 percent and should be replaced (Pedro’s Plus II tool has two steps on the third tang, indicating either 0.5 percent or 0.75 percent elongation); if it won’t go into the chain, the chain is within specification. These three-point tools are the only gauges I know of that accurately measure SRAM AXS 12-speed road chains.
