Jeff Gordon to wear Chiefs jersey after losing Super Bowl bet - 247Sports

When the garage area opens for business later this week for the start of Speedweeks at Daytona, every driver and every team in the NASCAR Cup Series will set forth in trying to begin the 2020 season on the right foot - if not as champions of the Daytona 500. Unfortunately for Jeff Gordon, he is now beginning his fifth Speedweeks as a broadcaster having already endured a loss.

Gordon, four times a Cup Series Champion and now a NASCAR Hall of Famer, had a lot riding on the outcome of Super Bowl LIV. Not only was his employer (FOX) broadcasting the game, but the Vallejo, California native's San Francisco 49ers were competing for their sixth Super Bowl triumph against the Kansas City Chiefs. That led to a wager with current NASCAR star and noted Chiefs fan Clint Bowyer - If the 49ers won, Bowyer would have to wear a Niners jersey during a NASCAR Xfinity Series broadcast. If the Chiefs won, Gordon would have to wear a Kansas City jersey during a broadcast in Daytona.

After Patrick Mahomes rallied the Chiefs from a 20-10 fourth quarter deficit to win Super Bowl LIV 31-20, Gordon was left conceding defeat.

Gordon's choice of .gif has an extra tinge of humor to it, as it comes from a moment where not all was rosy between him and Bowyer. After a season-long feud during the 2012 season, Gordon intentionally wrecked Bowyer in the closing laps of the penultimate race at Phoenix, leading to a mad dash by Bowyer to confront Gordon in his hauler. The incident arguably cost Bowyer a shot at the 2012 Cup Series title (Bowyer finished second in the final standings to Brad Keselowski by 39 points), but the two have since reconciled.

Bowyer, meanwhile, was collecting far more Ws than simply seeing his Chiefs win their first Super Bowl in his lifetime. The Emporia, Kansas native also had a similar wager with NHRA driver Ron Capps, informing him that he was "going to look good in a Chiefs jersey" while partying post-game.

Now that he's celebrated a Super Bowl victory, Bowyer will get back to his day job as he looks to win the Daytona 500 for the first time in his career - The Stewart-Haas Racing driver's best finish has been a fourth place result, which he posted twice in 2009 and 2010. Gordon, meanwhile, won the 500 three times during his career, claiming victory in The Great American Race in 1997, 1999, and 2005.
