If you’re planning on flying Alaska tomorrow, you might want to plan on wearing your favorite holiday sweater.
December 20th is “Ugly Sweater Day” and to celebrate, Alaska is giving guests that are wearing any kind of holiday sweater Priority Boarding.
The promotion extends to all Alaska and Horizon Air flights and is only good on December 20th. As for when that “Priority Boarding” is going to happen, you’ll be able to board after group B. So, if you’re flying First Class or have status with Alaska then you’re going to be better off in your original boarding group.
Given that holiday travelers tend to travel with a bit more baggage than normal, that Priority Boarding group might potentially make the difference between you getting on board with your suitcase and having to gate check it because the overhead bins are full. If you’re traveling with luggage you don’t want to check, this might be a good way to ensure you don’t have to.
And if you are flying tomorrow, consider this my reminder to also go ahead and download your airline’s app onto your phone if you haven’t already, even if you’re not flying on Alaska.
Beyond finding out when that boarding is set to take place, your airline’s app can work as your boarding pass when you inevitably misplace your paper one, can let you know about delays and will let you make that last-minute seat change.
That seat change option is perhaps the most useful this time of year. If you’re currently assigned to a crappy seat, check your airline’s app around 30 minutes before your flight. The airline will have started to bump up elite customers to better seats, leaving their former seats (which are likely better than yours) ripe for the taking.
And if you are flying Alaska on the 20th and have access to the lounge, it’s worth a stop there on the way to the gate, even if you aren’t wearing a sweater. All Alaska lounges will have free snowflake sprinkled lattes and peppermint mochas all day, as well as a “special hot toddy cocktail” as part of the celebration.
