For someone who exclusively creates puffy cupcake dresses, Danish designer Cecilie Bahnsen is a lot less fussy than you’d expect. She wears her dresses with flat shoes, Oxfords, and Suicoke sandals — never heels — making them look less like something Marie Antoinette would wear and more like a vintage school uniform.
The fashion world has been watching Bahnson closely. She was a finalist for the LVMH prize, which buzzy designers like Marine Serre and Simon Porte Jacquemus have won, and her brand is sold at retailers like Dover Street Market, SSENSE, and Net-a-Porter. We spoke with her about heels, Diptyque, and cotton T-shirts.

What would you never wear? Heels.
What’s your dream vacation? Right now it is super-cold in Denmark so I can’t stop dreaming of a sunny beach and beautiful blue water. My favorite holiday island is Sicily in Italy.

What is a trend that you like right now? Flat shoes and a puffy dress.

T-shirt? We just made a white cotton jersey T-shirt for Pre-Spring 2020 with large cotton poplin sleeves that I just love to wear every day.
What is a photo that defines your style? I always wear my own dresses for all days and occasions.
What’s your favorite place in your studio/office/home? My favorite place in the studio is the showroom where my team and I work on all details of the collection.
