NBA players and referees will wear a black band on their uniforms for the remainder of the season in honor of former NBA Commissioner David Stern, the league announced Friday.
The honor will include the playoffs and finals. The band will be on the left shoulder above the NBA logo.
Stern, who served as commissioner from 1984-2014, died Wednesday as a result of the brain hemorrhage suffered three weeks ago. He was 77.
Stern led the NBA during its most successful period in league history. According to the league announcement, Stern is being recognized for his ‘countless contributions to the NBA.’
The Hawks will observe a moment of silence for Stern on Saturday, their first home game since the passing of the commissioner.
Following his death, the Hawks issued the following statement: “For 30 years, the NBA was fortunate to have a transcendent leader in David Stern. His passion for the sport and brilliant vision for its growth propelled the NBA to become the popular and successful global sports brand that it remains today.
“David built a league with the core values of integrity, teamwork, respect and innovation that captured the hearts of millions and for that, we will be forever grateful. We extend our deepest condolences to David’s wife, Dianne, and the entire Stern family.”
