A Chinese shopper was arrested after she refused to wear a face mask amid the coronavirus epidemic that has rapidly spread to thousands of people, according to a report.
The woman, identified only by her surname Qiu, was pinned to the ground by officers after she went without the protective gear to a supermarket in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, The Sun reported.
The supermarket is located in the Guandong province, where officials issued a temporary order Jan. 26 requiring its 113 million residents wear masks to help contain the deadly virus, the outlet reported.
Qiu had been initially confronted by other shoppers who asked that she put on a mask or leave the store, the report said.
But when she refused, an argument broke out between her and the other customers, with Qiu spitting at them, The Sun reported.
Footage obtained by the outlet showed officers struggling to detain the woman in an aisle of the store.
Qiu was seen being pinned to the ground by officers who tied her hands behind her back, according to the report.
She was brought to the hospital, where she tested negative for the virus, which has killed more than 300 people, The Sun reported.
She was then brought to the police for further questioning about the incident. It’s unclear whether she will face charges in the supermarket confrontation.
The incident comes after Chinese officials confirmed that more than 14,000 people have been infected with the virus.
